secure PDF tool

Protect a PDF with a password

Require a password to open a copy of your PDF. The encryption runs on your device, and your document and password stay in your browser.

How it works

Three straightforward steps

  1. 01

    Select an unlocked PDF

Choose a PDF you can already open. If it has an existing password, use Unlock PDF with that password before protecting it again.

  2. 02

    Choose a strong password

Use a long, unique password and confirm it carefully. Store it somewhere safe: ArchwayPDF does not keep a copy or provide recovery.

  3. 03

    Download the protected copy

Save the encrypted PDF and reopen it with the password to check the result. Send the password separately from the document.

FAQ

Common questions

What does an opening password protect?

Encryption prevents a compatible PDF reader from displaying the document without a valid password. Once someone opens it, they can read its contents and may be able to save, print, photograph or share them. A password is not a guarantee against redistribution by an authorized recipient.

Can you recover a forgotten password?

No. Your password is processed locally and is not stored by ArchwayPDF. Keep the original unencrypted file in a safe location and use a password manager if appropriate. Losing both the password and original may leave you unable to access the protected copy.

Does this change the original PDF?

The tool creates a new downloadable copy. It does not overwrite the file you selected. Check the protected copy in the reader your recipient uses before relying on it, especially with older readers or documents containing digital signatures.

Can I encrypt an already protected PDF?

First unlock it using its existing password. This keeps the workflow explicit and avoids confusing two different opening passwords. Unsupported or damaged PDFs produce an error instead of a result that only appears to be protected.

Is the password included in analytics?

No. Neither passwords, file names nor document content belong in analytics. Encryption uses local browser memory. Use a trusted browser and device; browser extensions and other software with access to your screen or device are outside this tool’s control.
